How to Spend Time with God

Lydia Poon

It is easy to prioritize other things in our lives before God, whether intentional or not. It is important to take some time to reflect where you are with God and go back to what is most important to us. Here are some reminders and steps we can take to spend time with God and get closer to Him.

  1. Make quiet time with God

Allotting 10-15 minutes in your day for some quiet time can help you clear your mind and hear God's voice.

Start by preparing your heart with God, starting with a short prayer to call for God to speak to your heart and soul, surrounding you with his presence.

Then, read a devotional or a short passage in the Bible. Psalms or Proverbs make for great books to read a passage in. When reading, allow the Word to speak to you, trying  to apply the themes and lessons into your life.

Lastly, speak with God. Have the last few minutes be dedicated to praying to Him openly and honestly like you would with a friend. It can be about anything - your thoughts, feelings, emotions, or just an update about your day. In doing so, open your ears to Him and try to listen to the words he echoes back to you.

  1. Read the Bible

It is difficult to know where to start when reading the Word. You don't have to start from the beginning! Pick any book of the Bible and start by reading a chapter a day, incorporating the Word into your life little by little. If you don't know where to start, read a summary of each book in the Bible and find one that tackles with what you are struggling with or want to learn more about. As you read, ask two question: What does this teach me about God? What does this teach me about how I should live? Write or meditate on these thoughts.

  1. Tackle a weakness in your faith

No one is perfect with God. There may be sins we are struggling with, difficult situations in life that need answering, or aspects in our relationship with God that we can build upon more. Think about what you would like to work on with God and try to spend some time building upon that.

To tackle a weakness, you can read Christian books that target your weakness. Reading will not only help you grow your relationship with God, but can also grow in different areas of our lives. It helps you know more about God, grow as a Christian, learn how to love others, and learn how to be a good leader and role model towards others.

You don't have to do one of these ideas individually. It is easy to mix and match these steps throughout our walk with God. The only thing that this requires is a little bit of time and effort each day. The most important thing that you practice out of all them, however, is to trust God in the process.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,

and do not lean on your own understanding.

6 In all your ways acknowledge him,

and he will make straight your paths.

Our strength and growth in God ultimately comes from God and God alone - not from our own works. Rely on Him and trust in Him to speak to you and grow in you.
